The Design
The new boxes were the result of a collaborative effort by various interests. The design was based on recognised RSPB practice, with advice from Mr John Vickerman, our local ornithological expert. The boxes were then built by the Wessex Rehabilitation Centre of Salisbury District Hospital, with funds from both FOHS and a generous Community Development Grant from Salisbury City Council. The metal plate around the entrance hole is to prevent squirrels gnawing the hole larger and larger in their determination to get at the box contents! The Installation
The end product (each box numbered for ease of monitoring which boxes are used by which species of bird) were erected by Alabare and members of FOHS over the period of a few days. The intention was then to maintain an informal monitoring of the boxes to chart their use. As you walk around the Slope you will be able to see the numerous boxes, and may be lucky enough to see some residents coming and going - particularly during the frantic breeding season, during which Blue Tits can make up to 1000 trips a day bringing juicy morsels for their rapidly growing off-spring.
