Flooding Risk

Flooding at the ford in Tanners Lane due to high river levels

Flood Wardens

Following in the footsteps of other Wiltshire towns and villages, the Winterbournes have Flood Wardens. John and Jenny Randle have taken on this voluntary role and as such liaise with the Environment Agency.

There are just ten properties in the Winterbournes which may have some flood risk of river flooding. The owners of these properties have been notified. However, properties on the margins of flooded areas may also be at risk of damage if the water table rises. Localised flash flooding can also be caused by blocked drains and sheer volume of rain.

A number of flood protection measures have been taken recently throughout England by the Environment Agency and there are a number of measures which can be taken on an individual basis to reduce the risk of flooding. The Environment Agency gives advice upon preparing for a flood, including personal safety and protecting possessions.

Six steps to prepare for flooding

  • Prepare a flood kit of essential items
  • Check your insurance cover for flood
  • Make a list of important contact numbers
  • Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies
  • Move important or sentimental items to safety - eg photos, medication
  • Think about what else you would move to safety during a flood - eg pets, furniture, electrical equipment or your car!
  • Put together a flood kit

Flooding can happen quickly – be prepared by making up a flood kit of essential items:
  • Copies of your home insurance documents
  • A torch with spare batteries
  • A wind- up or battery radio
  • Warm, waterproof clothing and blankets
  • A first aid kit and prescription medication
  • Bottled water and non-perishable foods
  • Baby food and baby care items
  • A list of important contact numbers
  • Keep your flood kit handy
