For one night only - watch a film in the Winterbourne Glebe Hall

Defiance (15)

137 minutes

"Freedom begins with an act of defiance!"
After the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, the Bielski brothers escape the slaughter and hide in the woods. Soon they are joined by many others, all running from the savagery being inflicted on the Jews.

Tuvia (Daniel Craig) disagrees with his brother Zus (Liev Schreiber) over what to do with the growing forest population. Tuvia believes that they must welcome anyone who wants to join them while Zus thinks they should be fighting the Germans.

After a major falling out, Zus joins the local Russian partisans - with whom the Bielskis had already completed an informal truce - and Tuvia stays with their forest community.

Glebe Hall News

Here we are looking forward to Easter and some nice spring days we hope. The snow was a bit of a surprise but looked delightful from the warmth and comfort of our conservatory. There are a lot of advantages to being retired and one big plus is not having to go out in bad weather!

Still the winter was cheered up for us with an excellent evening of songs and a funny sketch by the Bourne Valley Singers in December. Further entertainment was provided by Moviola with The Duchess in January and then Miss Pettigrew lives for a day in February. The latter proved to be very amusing and entertaining in spite of being a little known film. Both films were well supported.

By the time you read this article I will have finished my term of office as Glebe Hall Chairman and will no longer be a member of the Glebe Hall Committee. I will however continue to run the Film nights for the immediate future. Lynne James will be taking over as Chairman from 12th March 2009. Sue McIntyre retires as Secretary and will be replaced by Mrs Pat Merrett. A Vice Chairman and a Fund-raising Chairman are still required so please contact Lynne James on 01980 610635 if you would like to offer your services.

May I take this opportunity to thank the members of the Glebe Hall Committee for their support during my term of office, in particular Sue McIntyre, Maureen Atkinson, Pam Hall, and Tiger Davies with the everyday running of the Hall; the members of the Fund- raising Group; leaders of organisations in the Village; Fiona the Village Link editor and last but not least my husband whose help and support has been invaluable. Without all of these people the Hall and the Village would be a poorer place. I have enjoyed my term of office but am very happy to hand over the reins to Lynne whom I know will do an excellent job.
