BOURNE VALLEY GOOD NEIGHBOUR LINK SCHEME

SEPTEMBER 2010 NEWSLETTER from Elaine Jones

I do hope you all managed to enjoy the few weeks of sunshine as it certainly looks as if we have had summer for this year. As I write this, on the 25th August, it is raining heavily and, apart from a few days of good weather forecast here and there, it sounds as if we have had the best of the weather for this year. I must be getting old, as I keep remembering “when I was young and summer seemed to stretch forever!”

I must tender my apologies for my August submission. Luckily, one eagle- eyed reader noticed my non-deliberate mistake. The Annual General Meeting/Coffee Morning is on Saturday 18th September (and not the 19th as I had put last time). I had checked the date but was looking at last year’s notebook and not this. I know our regulars would know that we always hold the coffee mornings on a Saturday but this correction is for any new attendees. We are hoping that we have a good turnout from the residents of the Bourne Valley.

This is notice of an extra item of interest that will be unveiled at the meeting. Helen Lines from Link/Community First is coming along to show a DVD and give a talk on a new Good Neighbour Scheme that will be introduced into the parishes of Idmiston and Winterbourne later this year. It is a pilot scheme and the Bourne Valley Link is one of four Link Schemes to be invited to take part. Our Bourne Valley Link Scheme will be run alongside this new scheme but will not be part of it. Please come along and see what it is all about.

August has been a relatively quiet month as medical staff at the Hospital and surgeries have been taking their holidays. I am sure requests will be increasing once the schools go back. If you do receive an appointment, please give plenty of notice to our co- ordinator, to enable her to find a suitable volunteer.

The Link number is 01980 611117

Bookings taken Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm
Answerphone in use during evenings and weekends

If at all possible, please give us a minimum of 48 hours notice before an appointment

Information about our Scheme

Where
The Bourne Valley Link Scheme covers the villages of Cholderton, Allington, Boscombe, Newton Tony, Idmiston, Porton, Gomeldon, Winterbourne Gunner, Winterbourne Dauntsey, Winterbourne Earls & Hurdcott situated in the valley of the River Bourne, between 5 and 15 miles north east of Salisbury in Wiltshire, UK.

What
Link schemes are community based initiatives that aim to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged, elderly or infirm people by providing a structured good neighbour service delivered by volunteers from within the local community.

Why
Link schemes provide a free and confidential support service to enable those without access to transport or support resources to access local services and facilities. The service is provided by volunteers using their own cars. The range of Link Scheme services varies from providing volunteer drivers to take someone to a medical appointment, taking them shopping or to visit an old friend, or simply providing good neighbour care. The Link Service aims to complement the provision of other services, whether statutory or voluntary.

How
Each Link Scheme is run by a group of local volunteers managed by a local Link Co- ordinator. Users wishing to use the scheme simply call their local co- ordinator who will then arrange for a volunteer to carry out the task.

Payment
There is no charge but each Link Scheme depends on anonymous donations from its users to help run the service. Our volunteer drivers are unpaid, but receive a payment based on the mileage they cover.

There are 44 Link Schemes established in Wiltshire & Swindon providing Good Neighbour support for those in need in rural communities.
