2005 Question to Secretary of State for Health

Challenging government policy…

At the Education and Social Services Conference in Birmingham in October, I challenged the Secretary of State for Health, Patricia Hewitt MP, on the impact of non-stop changes in government policy.

You highlight the need for partnership working and to focus on outcomes. Please would you explain the reasoning behind the re-organisation of PCTs, and your understanding of the impact this will have on local authorities seeking to work together with our Health colleagues to improve outcomes.

I would like to compare this, if I may, with a kitchen designer who, when the kitchen is almost complete, sees a better design, new technology, so tears the kitchen down and starts again – and does this repeatedly.

And, standing in the kitchen being repeatedly torn down and rebuilt, is someone trying to cook a meal…
