Whats On
On my election in May 2005, I made several pledges. After 2 years in post, I am reviewing my progress so far…
Complete the footpath from Pauls Dene
to St Mark’s, at the St Mark’s
end
This is now completed
Introduce 20 mph zones throughout the
Salisbury East division
These are in the Local Transport Plan
as Requested Schemes
Listen to you and respond promptly
Value elderly people and work to
provide the services they
deserve
As Joint Cabinet Member for Community
Services, I have overseen a radical
increase in choice and variety in the
community meals available to
individuals and to luncheon clubs.
There was great concern about
this change but, since its
implementation, there has been very
positive feedback on the new service.
The increasing percentage of our population who are ‘elderly’ is a challenge and also a great opportunity for us all. I am keen to encourage elderly people to share their wisdom and experience with other parts of the community. I am also working to ensure that vulnerable elderly people are cared for, as much as possible, within the communities they know and love. This is not solely the job of ‘local government’. It is a responsibility we all share.
Encourage young people to aim high
through our excellent schools
Since my election, I have visited every
school in my division. I greatly value
the excellent work done in our local
schools, and I long to stop unnecessary
government interference in this
Love our historic City and be
passionate about safeguarding
Wiltshire's heritage
I have been on the Steering Group for
the Vision for Salisbury almost since
its inception, aiming to see Salisbury
take its place in the 21st
century, and so retain its unique
character.
Over the Summer, there is a major public consultation on the Vision, on local Community Plans and also on the wider Local Development Plan for Salisbury and the surrounding area. Do please make your views known!
My new role as Cabinet Member for Culture offers further opportunities to fulfil this pledge…
Support effective crime reduction
initiatives, making our streets
safer
As part of my last cabinet role, I was
responsible for Community Safety county-
wide, discussing with senior management
of the Police, Fire, Ambulance and
Health how best to work together to
make our communities safe places in
which to live and work.
I have spoken recently to PC Beck Lennane and PC Darren Foulger, who head up the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams in my area. Neighbourhood policing is a real opportunity for local people to take responsibility for their own community, rather than just ‘leaving it to the experts’. It will also encourage all the agencies and organisations, who work in an area, to do so in a joined- up way!
If you would like to know more about Neighbourhood Policing, please e-mail beck.lennane@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk, darren.foulger @wiltshire.pnn.police.uk or phone 08454-087000.
