Bluebells and Bird Boxes

A number of people generously donated funds to purchase bluebells to plant on the Slope. The hope was that the bluebells would take to the ground conditions present on the Slope and in time would become established and self-multiplying. FOHS particularly wanted to source bluebells which are native to the UK, and were eventually successful in that quest. During the dormant period of 2006 a few hundred bulbs were planted in various locations within the Harnham Slope area and the fruits of those labours are now evident for all who walk the Slope to see and enjoy. Well done to all those involved, and a very big "Thank You" to all who helped financially by their generous donations.

As part of the Friends'approach of trying to broaden the diversity of Nature on the Slope, a considerable number of bird boxes were made and installed on suitable trees. The emphasis had been on catering for small birds (Blue Tits and the like) and as you stroll around the Slope you will no doubt see that quite a few of those boxes have residents during the early part of the year. It is quite possible that a number of those boxes are also used during the winter months for roosting.
