March 2010 Salisbury Area Board Update

View from the Chair
Your local councillor, Mary Douglas, is the Chair of Salisbury’s Area Board, which meets about six times a year.

She says, ‘This is a real opportunity for us in Salisbury to come together and tackle the issues which none of us can solve on our own. I invite members of the public, churches, voluntary organisations, police, fire, and health to come and help make a lasting difference to our community.’

Issues tackled so far

• The Core Strategy. Many people were concerned about the impact of new houses and businesses on our already over-loaded road system.

• So then we looked at the Transport Model used to forecast the impact.

• Plans for a new Academy at Salisbury High School

• How the council should spend our money

• Issues facing older people in our city and what we could do about them

• Pavements – what the council does and does not do and why

Community Area Grants
The Board also gives out around £78,000 a year in grants to local community projects. We then ask them to come and tell us how they are doing. So far, we have helped fund a new Nightclub evening for disabled young people, Salisbury Street Pastors, Arts activities for young people, a project to celebrate the History of St Edmunds and the Bird-Keepers Association.

How can I get involved?
