North is a strange amalgum. Equal parts: poet, philosopher, mystic, libertarian, romantic and socialist. He turned his back on materialsim and pursued his search for the 'free and simple life' in a remote rural retreat. Here he returned over and over to the same themes and the same ancient landscapes. His life and work embody something of Thoreau's idealism: "When the mathematician would solve a difficult problem, he first frees the equation from all encumbrances, and reduces it to its simplest terms. So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real.
