The first phase of the Milford Street Bridge project was completed in June 2011 after running for fifteen months.

When the ring road was built in the 1970s that part of our city was changed forever. Hundreds of buildings - some of architectural interest, some industrial and some family homes disappeared. With them has gone part of our community.

Using local peoples stories and memories we created an oral history of the area.

This was used as an inspiration for dance and movement, historical walks, visual art and poetry.

The project was completed in spectacular fashion with the painting of a large mural on one side wall of the Milford Street Bridge depicting some of the lost buildings, and characters from the area. This was followed by a whole week of events at which the whole community celebrated its heritage!

If you would like a copy of the oral history CD "Before the Bridge", you can get one free of charge from Saisbury Library and Salisbury Arts Centre.

If you want to access the whole oral history please get in touch - it is a fascinating record of times past, and is also full of funny, poignant, sad, strange stories.

An exhibition about the project was held in Salisbury Library in April 2011. The main part of this were large boards containing information on each of the main themes from the oral history and our research. These can be viewed in pdf form on the "Noticeboard" page.
