What is the St Edmund's Community Association?
The Association was born out of the need for local people to have more of a say about things that affect them.

How did it all begin?
In 2002 local people carried out a survey covering a whole range of topical local issues. Over 400 survey forms were returned and the results were published as a newsletter and a copy was sent to every house and business in the area. A public meeting took place in the Arts Centre at which residents called for the group to be established. A steering group was formed on the night and that group developed a constitution for the Community Association. The constitution was adopted by residents at a further public meeting and the Association came into being!

Who is a member of the Association?
The constitution makes clear that everyone over the age of 16 who lives or works in the St Edmund's Area is a member of the Association.

How is it Run?
Each year at a public meeting, the Association appoints a Steering Group and Street Coordinators, these people run the day to day business of the Association. The Steering Group appoints a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and nominates members to take the lead on local issues such as Traffic & Transport, Environment, Young People, etc. The Street Coordinators help to keep in contact with residents by delivering the Association's Newsletter and other information. This makes sure that everything is community based.

How often does it meet?
The Steering Group meets about every six weeks or so and seeks to convene at least 3 larger public meetings each year to explain what it is doing and to seek the views of the wider community.

What has the Group been doing so far?
Quite a lot really... Over the eight years we have been going we have
- set up a community recycling facility
- done several community arts projects, including creating the mosaics in the Greencroft underpass
- worked closely with the relevant organisations over the building of the new council offices
- lobbied the local councils on lots of issues raised by our members
- run several fun events for local people
- We are now undertaking our biggest project to date: The Milford Street Bridge Project
