largest of these original trees are
around 20 feet in girth whereas ours
is only 14 feet. It is however clearly
older than the Horse Trough (1891) and
was probably planted in the early 19th
Century by the 11th Duke of Somerset
at around the time of the Battle of
Waterloo and the end of the war with
France (1815) or for Victoria’s
Coronation (1837). The presence of the
nearby Copper Beech of the same age
suggests a commemorative planting.
