We all have a mental health. We are all on a continuum, health is something we have to work at and create for ourselves. It is not something that we automatically have. It is important to remember that experiencing some form of mental distress at sometime in our lives is common for people from all walks of life. Research studies indicate that in Britain, twelve million adults every year attending GP surgeries have symptoms of mental illness-that’s about 1 in every 6 people in this room. Psychotherapy literally means ‘treatment of the mind’, therefore Hypnotherapy is one method contained within this. We are all individuals who have a different set of experiences and situations to encounter throughout our lives. Our reactions to these experiences are also unique. Much of who we are, what we are, what drives and motivates us is hidden from our everyday awareness. We build defence mechanisms to disguise the things we find difficult to cope with. Psychotherapy seeks to treat the whole person. It can help you explore present circumstances that you are finding difficult, experiences from the past that you find hard to come to terms with, or events in the future that you may be worried about. It helps to validate how you are feeling, how your behaviour may be affected, and also how your body and mind may be responding. Psychotherapy can help you make sense of the emotions that are controlling you, and the experiences that trigger them, it will strengthen your ability to cope. Your self-esteem and self- confidence should also increase, helping you to reach your personal potential.
