The Chancel

When approaching the chancel, you will see to the left and immediately behind the pulpit the remnants of a stone staircase. It once led to the rood loft above the crypt below, but it is now blocked off. The chancel is wholly early English in style, with single lancet windows on the north and south wall, and three widely spaced stepped lancet windows on the east wall. There are eigthteenth century tomstones, and a brass plaque on the north wall which indicates that the heavy reredos set behind the altar and the eight pieces of glass in the chancel are in memory of the Revd. William Henry Awdry. At the bottom of the window dedicated to St Stephen there is inset a small medallion bearing the arms of Henry Chichell, 1414-43, who was Archdeacon of Sarum before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury.
