A picture for Lest-We-Forget

Rudyard Kipling (a son of Tisbury folk) wrote his Recessional Poem for the occasion of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Verse 2 is;

The tumult and the shouting dies; The Captains and the Kings depart: Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a contrite heart. Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget--lest we forget! Once again a Parliament has been elected, and elsewhere many a County Council or Unitary Authority. Many who held office in either, not only lost Office, but also fell by the wayside. Possibly did so through their own fault, but probably the majority in local Governance did so, because of the vagaries of our electoral process. Which of course possibly may have accounted for Councillors being elected in the first place !

It is an excellent thing that we all have an opportunity to stand for election, however is it not abusing the system if any stand, without regard to the feasibility of ones cause? There are times one wonders whether fines on a rising scale might be imposed on time wasters, proportionate to the Electorate’s lack of interest in their candidacy. No hopers can adversely affect the outcome of elections, even precipitate the election of a candidate whom the Protest candidate would least like to see elected. Maybe such candidates rather ‘than upset the apple cart’ might more effectively write Blogs or letters to the press, or avail ourselves of Press comment columns. Its an harmless hobby, and balm to ones feelings, regardless of whether anyone reads what one writes or not.

Is it not time our whole electoral system was reviewed. It isn’t Democratic for any to Govern in the face of an overwhelming majority who has no confidence in them. Whatever ones view of UKIP, more voted for them than for the SNP and Lib Dems. combined, but UKIP has but the one seat. J.B.P. 24.5.2015.
