COMMUNITY NETWORK LAUNCHED IN HARNHAM At the end of October, the first meeting of Harnham Community Network was held in Harnham Parish Hall in Lower Street. All those present shared a concern that there are urgent community needs in Harnham that are not being met, and that by sharing experience and pooling resources, members can identify ways of acting together to benefit the local community. A wide range of local voluntary and community organisations are represented, including Harnham Parish Churches and Harnham Free Church, the Harnham Memorial Hall, the Harnham Sports and Social Club, and environmental groups such as the Friends of Middle Street Meadow. Statutory bodies represented include Harnham Junior and Infant Schools, the Neighbourhood Policing Team, the Community Midwifery Service at Salisbury District Hospital, Salisbury City Council and its Community Development Team. Active local residents are also members of the Network. In a brain-storming session, the group identified a range of issues facing local residents: - families struggling to survive on low pay or benefits; - isolation among both young parents and elderly and disabled people; - the limitations imposed on many residents by physical and mental disabilities; - the difficulty of sharing information about local activities, events and services across the neighbourhood without a regular free community newspaper for Harnham; - the need for accessible ante- and post-natal classes within the neighbourhood; - the lack of informal facilities for young people locally, particularly since there are no secondary schools in Harnham; - the need for more local holiday activities for young families, especially where both parents are working. The Network also received an update on the plans to transform Harnham Parish Hall into a community hub serving the whole neighbourhood. Anyone interested in contributing to this important new initiative should contact the Convenor, Charles Woodd, Churchwarden of Harnham Parish Churches, on 07962 213494 or at charleswoodd46@gmail.com.
