Downton History Group

A picture for Downton History Group

The Group aims to advance public education and enjoyment of the heritage rich history of Downton and the local area. We actively encourage the local population to take a greater interest in the history of Downton through our small museum in the local library, our archive of items deemed important to the local heritage and our annual talk and exhibition activities. We have a changing exhibition of photographs from the archive displayed in the Memorial Hall and we organise a yearly talk by distinguished historians and archaeologists (including Richard Starkey in 2007). At the moment a major ongoing project is the digital recording of verbal histories from some of Downton's oldest residents. We have recently been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant to transfer our archive onto a digital format and create a website.
