The south-eastern corner of Wiltshire is bordered on two sides by Hampshire.
It is quite distinct in character from most of South Wiltshire the chalkland
giving way to clay and to the heathland sands of the New Forest.
The
National Trust owned Pepperbox Hill (illustrated) commands spectacular views
of the area from the Salisbury Cathedral to the South Coast. The area looks
towards Salisbury for most of its services and leisure facilities although
the larger settlements of Alderbury, Downton, Redlynch, Whiteparish and
Winterslow all have developed centres with a range of local facilities.
