CASTLE MEADOW

The above illustration is a map extract from the report on the 1950s archaeological digs in the Castle Meadow area.

The Castle Meadow area was where the first known Downton people lived. Beaker, Neolithic and Mesolithic items were found during an archaeological survey in 1956. A full excavation was undertaken of the Mesolithic area in 1957. Saxon and Medieval features were also found in the area during further excavations in 1962.
