No one I have ever spoken with is quite
sure of the origins of the name of this
path. However, One possible explanation
is that it is taken from an old country
dance of the same name, which
originated in Cornwall. Although I
had
always thought it was unique to Downton
it also appears in other parts of the
west country and Wales. A path of this
name appears in Thomas Hardy’s ‘Under
The Greenwood Tree’, named after that
which passed near to his birthplace at
Higher Bockhampton in Dorset.
