MOOT CLOSE

Image 1 for MOOT CLOSE
The above illustration is a plan extracted from the report on the 1950s archaeological digs of the Roman Villa in Moot Close.

Roman Villa

PEVSNER: ‘200 yards S of the castle mound. The villa consisted of seven rooms with front and rear corridor and bath house. One of the rooms had a tessellated floor. The site, which was excavated in 1955, is datable to c300- 500 A.D.’

In 1953, part of the tessellated floor of a Roman villa was discovered by the occupier of the newly built 12 Moot Close, who was apparently digging a hole for a new washing line. Mr A T Morley Hewitt of Fordingbridge, who had connections with the site of the villa at Rockbourne, carried out investigative works and the remainder of the site was excavated by the Ministry of Public Building and Works (Ancient Monuments Inspectorate) during 1955 and 1956.

Although part of the original site was inaccessible due to the railway to the east, the excavations covered most of the rear gardens from 5 to 12 Moot Close. Part of the floor of the Villa can now be seen in Salisbury Museum.
