WHITE DIAMOND
Previously unpublished review of White
Diamond at Devizes? Corn Exchange in
1980, by Perry M of Vague - thanks to
Tom Vague for this: 'First impressions
are a load of longhaired yobbos with
musical instruments. The gig hasn’t
started yet, but I’ve got the feeling
they are going to be crap –
preconceived ideas rule ok! Action
start – A bloke counts up to one -
several times - and does a Richie
Blackmore impression - not impressed,
especially when he continues doing it.
Perry goes to the toilet - probably to
be sick by the sound of it. When I
return still nothing is happening.
After half an hour’s silence there is
a burst of drums then silence again. A
Campbell Road nutter walks in. White
Diamond eventually started with ‘Bye
Bye Johnny’ followed by ‘Alright Now’.
I’m beginning to wonder about leaving
halfway through the second number –
very Quo influenced, boring, wailing,
awful. Then they did a very
inefficient Cars’ cover. The bass was
too heavy and “F-----g awful voice”
quote Tim Getting?' Footnote: I don’t
know what Perry was doing at a bikers
gig but it sounds like they have a
really fun time in Salisbury. This is
probably why they go around in packs
of 20 glassing blokes minding their
own business. I know some bikers are
alright but for the one who glassed
Mike… one day you might get a
braincell.
