KIDS NEXT DOOR

Lewis Gooch (vocals); James Seago (guitar); Josh Holloway (guitar); Harriet Barr (bass); Paddy Bailey (drums)

The latest of the MySpace generation - www.myspace.com/kidsnextdoorsalisbury - where you can hear all 4 tracks of the band's 'Everything' EP, recorded with former lead vocalist Adam Armour

James Seago was the winner of the Best Guitarist category at the 2008 and 2009 Bass Connection awards.

Also in 2008, Kids Next Door were voted ‘Best Band’ in the Regional Finals of ‘Live & Unsigned’ (previously South Coast Idol).

The new line up is working on new material as well as adapting old material and are due to debut on 2 May 2009 at the Queens Tap in Swindon.

KILLER

Alan Marsh (vocals); Andy Boulton (lead guitar); Ray Dismore (guitar); Andy Robbins (bass); Steve Pierce (drums).

Formed at school in 1982. Although nothing was released officially, Killer recorded and distributed a demo tape featuring the following tracks: Hellbound; Urban Warrior; It Don't Matter To Me; Black Hole; Winner Takes All; Killer.

After a year they changed their name to ‘Tokyo Blade' as there were a number of other bands around at the time called ‘Killer’, but also put out a single as 'Genghis Khan'.

See also Genghis Khan; Tokyo Blade; Shogun; Jagged Edge; Mr Ice; Pumphouse. The history and discography of these groups is pretty complicated but it all becomes clear in the book Endless Beat (Voices Of The New Sarum Sound 1970-1999) (Timezone Publishing 2010)

THE KITCHENS

Mike Dyer writing in his ‘Salisbury Calling’ local scene and bands round up, Vague 2, 1979: 'The longest serving Salisbury band to date - disregarding club/dance bands. The original line-up was Andy Lavelock drums, Duncan Fulton bass and vocals, and the legendary Fred Phillips guitar. Their first gigs were at Amesbury Church Hall, followed by Stonehenge Festival in June ’77. After the third gig at the Gordon’s Club, Salisbury, came the first split. A promoter came to see them but left after ten minutes, suffering from a nervous breakdown and is now a potato seller at Basingstoke market. Colin Houlton took over on bass, leaving Duncan with vocals, and Paul Kelly took over guitar. Colin had to leave to look after his ill mother, and was also thinking of working in a kibbutz. He now plays with the QTs. They continued as a 3 piece, with Duncan back on bass guitar, doing many gigs in and around Salisbury, Coach and Horses, etc – giving the QTs their first gig – the only band around this area playing alternative music. Paul left due to disenchantment and two local gangsters were brought in. Duncan took over lead guitar, Gavin Lear on rhythm, and Ian Stramm on bass, the latter left to pursue a table tennis career. Gavin was later sacked due to underage alcoholism. The next line up came about when Duncan met guitarist Andy Sprogg, discovering mutual musical affinities. Back to a 3 piece, they played a few more gigs including support act to Wild Horses at the City Hall. Brian Robertson advised the band to get a female bassist. Duncan approached Miss Ruth Jones. She turned up to a practise on her moped and struck up an instant musical relationship. They also swap stamps. Since then the Kitchens’ live act has improved 100%. The songs are better, 3 of which can be heard on their first single EP ‘The Death of Rock’n’Roll’. They play in Duncan’s own words reactive music. All the songs are self penned. Their influences are the QTs, David Cassidy, alcohol, Taylor? Band and Ruth’s mum. Their ambitions are to change the world - into a cube. Ruth wants to go to university to get a degree and try to solve the QTs’ drink problem. They have been offered a deal by Polydor but turned it down. Their first single is just out on Red Square Records.'

Review of The Kitchens' single by Perry M, from Vague 3, 1980: 'Salisbury band the Kitchens recently got some money together and had this record pressed. The A side is one of their more recent songs ‘The Death of Rock’n’Roll’, and is quite a slow and vaguely blues song. The B side has two tracks, ‘Lies’ and ‘A Bomb’. The best track is ‘A Bomb’ which has a great introduction, Andy Ford - no longer with the band - plays guitar, and some good bass beats come through. The record was a good effort, but it doesn’t show the band’s full talent, as Andy Lavelock is a fantastic drummer, and Andy Ford is/was a better guitarist than can be heard on this record. The Kitchens didn’t seem to have the production trouble that the QTs had with their EP, and of the two the Kitchens’ is the better record. The Mental, as you may know are from Winchester and they have a record out, and although I haven’t heard it myself, I’m told by different people comments varying from ‘basic stuff’, ‘alright’ and ‘crap’, but judging from the live performance I imagine it’s pretty basic high energy rock. From 'Dickie’s Gossip Column', Vague 4, April 1980: 'Shock horror probe Kitchens split drama - again. Halfway through last month guitarist Sprogg left the band. They will continue as a 3 piece with Duncan playing guitar until a suitable replacement is found. They recently supported the Martian Schoolgirls in London -at Acklam Hall?.'

Previously unpublished review of The Kitchens and The Martian Schoolgirls at the Rising Sun in 1980, by Perry M of Vague - thanks to Tom Vague for this: '“Well this is cosy isn’t it”, said Duncan, singer of the Kitchens as the band went into their first number. The small hall was almost empty with just a few people leaning against the bar, and others leaning against the walls in the shadows. The Kitchens started with ‘A Bomb’, a track which is also on their maxi-single. The last time I saw them was when they were a 3 piece band, since then Duncan has handed the bass playing over to new member Ruth Cross, while he concentrates on singing. The band have a lot style, with the energetic drummer providing a fast and exciting beat while guitarist Andy Ford played some excellent solos. Duncan is a very relaxed frontman, he takes a sip from his drink then casually walks up to the microphone to do a bit of singing. Ruth handles the bass playing very well, having only been with the band a couple of months she is not as confident as the other members, and stands quietly concentrating on the playing. The Kitchens played a very professional and exciting set and taking into account the high standard of their debut record they deserve to be a very successful band. As the Kitchens ended their set I decided to wander the pubs in town and when I returned the Martian Schoolgirls were already into their set. They have been playing a lot in Salisbury lately, and everybody who had seen them said they were rubbish. So I thought I’d go and see them to find out for myself, especially as one of the guitarists was in Joe Strummer’s old band the 101’ers. The hall was full up now and I went through to the front of the crowd to see what the band were like. They consist of a drummer, bassist, 2 guitarists and a girl who danced around and sung lead and backing vocals. The only songs I remember were an old Diana Ross hit and the Martian Schoolgirls’ own single ‘Do It in the 80s’, all the songs were of the high energy rock type, and although I wouldn’t say they were rubbish, I don’t think I’d go out of my way to see them again, and of the 2 bands the Kitchens were far better than the Martian Schoolgirls.

MAD COW DISEASE

Thanks to Gary Loader (via Caroline Henderson) for most of this information.

Jon Maple (vocals); Colin Holton (guitars/backing vocals); Dan Bunce (guitars); Ally Gamble (bass); Atilla (keyboards/samples/backingvocals); Rob Arney and then later Jim Blackwell (drums).

Early 1990s grunge monsters. Jon Maple also wrote the Salisbury Journal music column ‘Sound Tracks’ for a while. Colin Holton and Atilla were, are and probably always will be legendary figures on the Salisbury scene and still apparently play with Paul Di’Anno. Ally Gamble came from New York and is now in London. Dan Bunce is in Devon and Jim Blackwell is probably in Deacons in Fisherton Street (it says here). The second album was produced by Andy Gill from the Gang Of Four

'The Rambler' magazine: 'The four tracks on the ('Costermongerin'') EP follow on from 'Decomposition' on last year's Salisbury compilation tape and are prime examples of the type of stuff spearheaded by Nirvana and Sonic Youth. 'Jesus Wants Me For A Vegetable', 'Body Bag' and 'Slop' (which features some rather interesting female accompaniment) are band compositions while the fourth track is an execution of Hawkwind's 'Masters Of The Universe'. I like this record - it's just about fine.'

From 'The Rambler' magazine's review of a 1990 gig with The Mayfields at Mr Chesils in Fisherton Street: 'The last time I saw most of this band they were in The Stand and were supporting The Fuzztones at The Arts Centre and were a thoroughly enjoyable poor man's Clash. They've changed a lot since then and are now even better in my opinion.'

THE MAYFIELDS

Late 1980s indie. Line up changed quite a bit with only Kevin Russell and Adrian Martin (better known as ‘Swanny’) being in the group throughout. But the line up above recorded the singles.

From 'The Rambler' magazine's review of a 1990 gig with The Magnificent at Mr Chesils in Fisherton Street: 'Strictly speaking The Mayfields were headlining and they were pretty good, especially their absolutely f-----' spiffing version of The Wonderstuff's 'Don't Let Me Down Gently'.'

THE MORRIGAN

Eccentric folk giants.

From 'The Rambler' magazine's review of a Morrigan gig at Downton Club in 1992: 'Bit of a dodgy mix at first, but once that was sorted out The Morrigan really took off. Not being an expert on this type of music I couldn't really tell you what many of the songs were called but there were a few off the (first) album, a polite version of 'Good King Wenceslas' and also Gershwin's 'Summertime', which I haven't heard sung so beautifully since Michael Stipe held us spellbound down Pompey Guildhall.'

MRS TAYLOR'S MAD

Andy Ware: 'We were together between 1984 and 1986 and had the line up of Dave Ware (vocals and harmonica), Andy Ware (guitar and vocals), Paul Read (bass), Trevor George (drums) and Tom Power (saxophone).'

'We had loads of energy, enthusiasm, and misplaced belief - influences were Stranglers/XTC/Undertones/Bunnymen. I don't know how you'd categorise our sound - a racket I guess. I couldn't/can't play guitar and that's probably why we eventually disbanded - I was hopeless.'

'We got a one page spread in The Journal and we thought we were 'there'. We also had a big picture in The Journal with me singing, playing a guitar, and a sign saying 'Ladies' from the toilet behind the stage that looks like it's stuck to my head! We played local venues including the now lost Amesbury Fleapit Cinema, Wilton Saddle Rooms, Rods pub (The Fisherton Arms) (3 times) - and of course the Arts Centre. We made a cassette, 'Brain Drain', with a booklet - what's happened to that gem I haven't a clue.'

'Dave went on to Jane From Occupied Europe, I went to Saudi Arabia, Paul to Newport, Trevor to the pub, whilst Tom tragically died whilst learning to become a tree surgeon. That's rock'n'roll for ye. I now live in Ireland but still keep in touch with Wiggy (of The Badgeman) and brother Dave.'

THE NEARLYMEN

Clive Roper (vocals/guitar); Frogg Moody (keyboards); Mark Blamey (bass); Gary Holton (drums)

Clive Roper: 'A New Wave band inspired by XTC, the Stranglers and Booze! Gigged Locally in the early 1990s, often double heading with The Nuthins. Last gig was supporting Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers at the City Hall.'

NEWCOMBE AND ROACH

When the Horizontal Bulgarians spilt in the mid- 1980s they quickly reformed as Newcombe and Roach with the following line up: Phil Manning (vocals/words), Matt Finn (lead guitar), Mickey Dyer (bass), Tim Darlow (5 string upside- down guitar) and Alex Mundy (druims).

See the Horizontal Bulgarians entry for Phil Manning’s recollections and find out more in the book Endless Beat (Voices Of The New Sarum Sound 1970-1999) (Timezone Publishing 2010)

NOSFERATU

Mike Vickers (vocals); Graeme Pinder (guitar); Ray Goodge (guitar); Graham Rose (bass); Nigel Emm (drums).

Formed from members of QTs and Nighthawk, Nosferatu started out in 1982. Ray Goodge was later replaced by Ray Dismore (formerly of Genghis Khan/Tokyo Blade). The band played only original material including 'Prince of Darkness' and 'Realms of Reality'. Gigs were played at the following venues: King and Bishop; Coach and Horses; Fisherton Arms (lots of gigs!); Oscars at Longleat; Saddle Rooms at Wilton and venues in Southampton and Bournemouth.

A review from the Salisbury Journal dated 7 July 1983 under the headline 'Nosferatu - Masters of Darkness': 'Nosferatu are emerging rapidly as one of Salisbury's prime pub crowd pullers, seemingly made to measure to go down well with a pint or two and add a little atmosphere to our local hostelries.'

THE NUTHINS

Lee (vocals and guitar); Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills (guitar and vocals); Bob Taylor (organ and vocals); Carol Galpin (bass guitar); Richie (drums and percussion). Lee was replaced by Marcus and then when he quit they reverted to a four-piece with Mojo on lead vocals. Carol was later replaced by Andy. Ian Allen played harmonica on the album.

Authentic McGuinn- fringed garage rock for the loved-up generation. Originally formed as The Good For Nothings following a meeting of wigged out minds at The Fuzztones incomparable Arts Centre gig in 1989.

From a 'Salisbury Journal' review of their second ever gig in 1990: 'The first thing one noticed about The Nuthins (a cool, if nihilistic moniker) were the haircuts, like Byrds-nests, shaggy and heavy of fringe, very sixties. Introduced by a cheesy organ solo, the rest of the band shambled on stage and segued into an even cheesier instrumental; suddenly we had timewarped to the American mid-west of 25 years ago. (The Nuthins) produced an accurate pastiche of the garage-punk of that era as seen on the now legendary 'Pebbles' and 'Nuggets' compilations. Even the snotty drawl of the vocals was faithfully reproduced. They were almost unbelievably good. My, isn't the local scene looking up?'

'The Rambler' magazine's review of 'Allergic Kiss': 'The Nuthins have progressed from their contribution to the Salisbury compilation tape a while back and this really is a pretty f----- ' good record, proper rock and roll music with proper guitar and keyboards, not a bunch of old t-----s strutting around the stage with a poodle perm and a cucumber down their boxers. What's more it comes in a proper card sleeve with a purple tinged picture of the band on the front, a black and white back and inside it's a good old fashioned 7" black vinyl with a black and white label. They really DON'T make records like this anymore.'
