ACROSPIRE

Bishop's school sixth form band. I think Dean Piacentini was on bass and at a gig at the school hall circa 1977, he delighted the lower houses by playing the riff to 'Peaches', before they went off on another doodly muso thing. Great name though.

AGAINST THE WALL

Graham ‘Chalky’ White (vocals/guitar); Nick Wells (vocals/bass); Gary Holton (drums)

Mid 1980s New Wave Jam inspired band from Gomeldon

ANATOMY OF ME

Part of 'The Next Generation' according to The Journal. Ed Collings-Wells was voted ‘Best Drummer’ at the 2006 Bass Connection Rock Awards

THE BADGEMAN

Neale Hancock (vocals and guitar); John Packwood (guitar and vocals); Simon Wigglesworth (bass guitar and vocals); Tim Kerley (drums); Allofem (percussion).

Highly talented late 80s early 90s psychedelic indie types – stated their Doors/Love/Velvets influences proudly. Blur later recorded a song called ‘Badgeman’ which was presumably an acknowledgement of the Wiltshire boys influence on the Britpop phenomenon.

Simon Wigglesworth: Dunno if The Badgeman inspired that Blur song, but Julian Cope was into us I think. He gave us some serious credit on his Head Heritage website, years after we split - I was pretty blown away by that! I would say we were as much into Joy Division etc as we were into space rock/psych. Our ‘English Road Song’ single had a nice map of Salisbury District on the cover.

Paul M: 'I spent a while working in 'Our Price' in the Old George Mall in the early 90's.The manager at the time was a huge Cope fan and wandered down to the shop floor one afternoon to find one of his temp staff (me) chatting away to Dorian Cope while Julian browsed the racks and picked out a couple of cd's. One of the albums they bought was 'Ritual Landscape' - I remember it well as the boss wanted to know what they had bought and ordered the next copy for himself!'

'The Rambler' magazine: 'This (Kings Of The Desert) is the best album ever by a local band' and 'I should buy it (The Curse Of The Badgeman) if I were you' and 'The band played excellently throughout' (when headlining at The Arts Centre in January 1992) and 'Go out and buy it (Ritual Landscape) and get them on 'The Pops' instead of that atrocious Erasure lot.'

BIG BIRD

Neale Hancock; Tim Kerley; Simon Wigglesworth; Micky Dyer; Skid; Daz Blake

Simon Wigglesworth: We did one packed out but disastrous gig at The Arts Centre - we were left with a PA with no engineer! Couldn't hear a thing! Got half way through one song, and I walked off in a strop! Everyone said I was a w----r for that, but I still think I was right – in fact we shouldn't have gone on in the first place. It's a shame, coz we were good. There is a demo knocking around, which includes a great version of Mayo Thompson’s ‘Worried Worried’.

Review by Dave Gerrard of a Big Num gig at The Old Ale House - Salisbury Journal, 3 May 2007: 'Its been too long, far too long, but finally the rather large Num are back. There was plenty of new material, but also a few tracks for the old school members of the audience, both equally well received. 'Too Clever For Words' was representative of times gone by, but the song I was singing climbing into bed that night was another song from yesteryear. A guest appearance on vocals from Dave Slack saw the Deloreans' drummer and ex-Big Num member proceed to belt out the ridiculously catchy 'I Love Waitrose', and the song sticks in your head. A cult classic, if you work at Waitrose that is, but great fun all the same. Throw in a cover of Right Said Fred's 'Deeply Dippy' and you've got an excellent all round performance, and a thoroughly enjoyable set from a really good band. Great to have these boys back and we better not have to wait as long this time to see them again'

BUBBLEGUM SPLASH!

Nikki Barr (vocals); Jim Harrison (guitar); Dave Todd (bass); Alan Harrison (stand up drums) (no relation to Jim); Marty Cummins (tambourine, backing vocals)

Class of C86 indie jingle janglers. Had a small hit in the NME indie charts with their EP. See also Jane From Occupied Europe.

From the sleevenotes to 'The Subway Organization 1986-1989': 'Bubblegum Splash epitomised the punk attitude that ran through the post-C86 generation. They were a garage band from Salisbury that made a great noise and had just enough pop songs to make one record. By recording two further songs for compilations they exceeded everyone's plans and expectations. Bubblegum Splash were Subway's stand against the dash to major label money and values that many indies of the time took.'

THE CAVALIERS

Maff (vocals); Brad (guitar); Jay (bass); Russ (drums)

The 'You're Not The Same Girl' single was officially launched at a homecoming gig at The Old Ale House in Crane Street on 1 February 2008. Cobi Murphy, writing in the Salisbury Journal on 7 February said: 'They gave an assured and polished display, belting out well-rounded indie-pop from start to finish. The guitar work was excellent, and the drums were particularly good. The single went down a treat, but my personal favourite of the night had to be the ever infectious 'Halloween', the band's previous release. A great show, an enjoyable night for all who managed to squeeze inside, and a fresh reminder of all that is good about the Salisbury music scene.'

Okay - I know I said I didn't want to compile endless lists of covers bands, but this lot got around to making a record which included a couple of original songs, and anyoldhow my cousin was the bass player so I could hardly leave them out could I? There might have been some personnel changes but the above line up made the album.

COLOSSUS OF RHODES (later CORE)

Okay, I have cheated with this lot as they are from Romsey (or Rumzee as we say round yer), but they played around town a bit and we at bluemoonraker sort of like the name and so, at least until such time as the ‘Sleepy Hampshire Market Town’ (© miscellaneous patronising tourist guides) gets its own rock’n’roll history site, here is where they are for posterity…

Bryan Langford: “I’m not a Salisbury person. I live in Romsey and have done so since 1972. I previously lived in a New Forest village but became friends with a number of people who lived in the Romsey area. I visited Romsey more and more frequently from mid-1971 onwards until I moved there in February 1972. Although I was working full time the main reason for my move was that I was the roadie with a prog rock band formed by my friends in Romsey. The band was called Colossus of Rhodes and was signally unsuccessful, in that we could find nowhere to play unless we booked a village hall ourselves and put something on.”

“In early 1972 Colossus of Rhodes decided that they would rather play than talk about playing so they became a ‘pop’ covers band, unimaginatively called CORE. They were auditioned by Tony Moreton of Ace Music and he took them on. Gradually Tony fed us more and more bookings. In September 1972 they played 23 gigs, which only gave us 7 nights off that month and most of us were still working in full time jobs!”

“CORE carried on gigging until early 1973 and then folded. I moved on to pastures new - I became the roadie for another Ace Music pop covers band called Chateau. I was with them for the remainder of 1973 through to Christmas 1974 when they too packed it in.”

DEAF IN THE WAVES

Becky Miller was awarded The Rose Gale Award For Outstanding Musician at the 2006 Bass Connection Rock Awards

From Dave Gerrard's review of the 'Colin's Six Pack' gig at the City Hall on 18 January 2007, printed in the Salisbury Journal on 24 January 2007: 'They seem to be more accomplished each time I see them, with a competent lead female singer. Their songs feature catchy rock/indie tunes, and are tight, which could see them go further, although they want to avoid getting stuck in a musical rut, producing similar sounding songs'.

DAVE DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK AND TICH

David ‘Dave Dee’ Harman (vocals); Trevor ‘Dozy’ Davies (bass guitar); John ‘Beaky’ Dymond (guitar); Michael ‘Mick’ Wilson (drums); Ian ‘Tich’ Amey (guitar).

Seriously under rated 1960s pop giants who had loads of big hits including a number one with ‘The Legend of Xanadu’. In terms of weeks spent on the UK singles charts they were the most successful act of 1966. Even so they tend to be ignored or looked on as a bit of a joke these days, probably because of the gimmicky name and dodgy matching stage gear. Fair enough, they will never be rated up with the Beatles– Stones-Who- Kinks- Small Faces, but they could be weird, whimsical and play fuzz guitar with the best of ‘em. Time for a re- evaluation? Well, if it’s good enough for The Troggs…..

I am sure you will all be aware of the sad death of Dave Dee, in January 2009, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Find out more in the book Endless Beat (Voices Of The New Sarum Sound 1970-1999) (Timezone Publishing 2010)

The discography mainly covers original UK releases, but there have been loads of reissues, compilations and (in some cases) rerecordings over the years. I have also included a few interesting foreign issues.

Dave Dee also recorded the theme song to the 1972 film 'Rentadick' with The Kings Singers. This has not been released on record but a video of the film was issued in 1986 (Virgin VC 3089)

There is also a cracking DVD: ‘Greatest Hits’ (issued in the UK by BR Music in 2003). This compiles just about every surviving TV clip from the UK, Germany, Belgium, France and Scandinavia (they were huge on the continent). Even if you couldn’t stand to watch David Harman’s toothy grin ever again, this is still a perfect example of how to put together a music DVD.

After the split Dave Dee stuck with the pop thing but with a slightly more MOR slant. The rest of the boys stuck together and went heavy. There is a pretty comprehensive band history and some nice pics at their official website: www.dddbmt.com and meanwhile over in Holland is what must be the ultimate website for collectors of the boys - just look at all those foreign picture sleeves! - www.davedeedozybeakymickandtich.nl

I must also give a nod here to the fine magazine ‘Zabadak!’ which started life as a DDDBMT fanzine in the mid 1980s. There is still a fair amount of information about the boys’ activities but the magazine has now expanded to cover a wide range of other classic pop, both old and new. DENNIS

Micky Dyer; Skid and others.

‘Emma (Mild Thing)’ is my favourite Salisbury song ever!

Simon Wigglesworth: They were great, and I still think Mick is the best bassist to come from Salisbury, ever.

COMPILATION APPEARANCES
GOD’S GREAT TAPE HEAD CLEANER (Salisbury compilation cassette including ‘Emma (Mild Thing)’) (7% GGTH 1)

DIDICOI QUARTET

Included Colin Holton and Jim Blackwell. You probably couldnt get away with a name like that in the free world these days.

DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS

The first line up recorded the single and was: Colin Holton (vocals/guitar); Karen Baker (vocals); John (guitar); Nick Heron (bass); Frogg Moody (keyboards); Dave Marsh (drums). Line up number 2 saw Alex Mundy and Clive Roper come in for Dave Marsh and Nick Heron respectively. Alex Mundy was then replaced by Jim Blackwell, and then Clive Roper by Nick Sherfield

7" SINGLE
Wealthy Man/Hostages (Rod Records ROD S1 - PC - 1985)

The Strugglers (Dave Marsh; Clive Roper; Colin Holton; Frogg Moody) were an offshoot from Don't Feed The Animals. Clive Roper: 'Good time fun band played local pubs from the early 1980s sporadically through to the early 1990s (mostly fuelled by drink in the early 80s). A tribute band to the New Wave before tribute bands existed !'

DRIVING SIDEWAYS

Bob Rushing (vocals); Pete Cook (guitar); Steve Pugh (bass); Andy Charleston (keyboards); Tim Clissold (drums)

Late 1989-90 - played rock/AOR at hundreds of gigs in and around Salisbury.

DROWNED BY OCEANS

Thor Porter won Best Drummer at the 2009 Bass Connection Awards.

ELLIOT NESS AND THE G-MEN

Mid 70s Art College band. Possibly punks but with a touch of the Dave Bowies.

ENDOR

Max Horrocks (vocals); Ryan Kowalewski (guitar); James Davies (bass); Ben Henstridge (drums)

Blimey, bands look so young these days! Voted Best New Band at the 2006 Bass Connection Rock Awards and Ryan Kowalewski won Best Guitarist at the 2007 Bass Connection Rock Awards.

ESPRIT DE CORPS

David 'Diddy' Savage (vocals); Nigel Bailey (guitar and keyboards); Phillip Seago (keyboards).

80s band with no recordings that I am aware of. Based in Woodfalls, the synth-pop capital of the world.

THE EXIT BAND

Tremayne Roden (vocals), Nick Kemp (lead guitar), Jesse Kemp (guitar), Colin Holton (bass), Steve Hutchinson (drums).

Possibly the first gigging band formed from the generation of musicians coming through in the early 70s. They split up in 1975 when Tremayne Roden moved back to Scotland with his family.
