I noted in this day's Times that Lucy Fisher, The Political correspondent commented on the fact 'Councils buy back houses at huge loss to tax payers'. Of course who could doubt the fact that the enforced sale of the Council Stock to sitting tenants at a discount, was a disaster. As too was the enfranchisement of privately owned long term Freeholds a great financial cost to those who owned them. Way back in 1979 Many a Conservative was elected at every level of Governance on the basis that they too were in favour of such sales. Indeed Mrs Thatcher's Government was elected to Parliament, on the basis of that very promise.
This left those who were minded to offer their services to local Councils in a bit of a dilemma. Should one stand as an Official Conservative and be elected, or should one stand as an Independent, or not stand at all?
Third of May 1979 certainly favoured the Conservative Candidates, and those
who took the middle path tended to be run over. So becoming 'just as dead as any one would have been, had he or she been wrong.'
