SWIAS Winter Meetings

Winter Meetings All meetings are held on Mondays at the Salisbury Cycling and Social Club rooms, Salt Lane, Salisbury. Starting time is 7.30. All are welcome; there is a small charge to cover expenses.

3 October: Aviation No Aircraft by Peter Donovan. This is the talk that had to be cancelled last season due to snow. The title is intriguing – did you know that horses transported aeroplanes and some submarines carried them too? What did a brick wall have to do with flying safely and what was a Judas Goat?

7 November: Members’ Evening. The annual opportunity for you to tell us about anything you have found in the world of Industrial Archaeology.

5 December: Fire Engines by Keith Miller Keith has a great collection of photographs showing fire engines, fire station buildings and other related items in Wiltshire, including Salisbury – even a site within a few yards of our meeting room.

9 January: Members Social: this is the second Monday in January as the first is the New Years Day Holiday. Please bring some items of food and an IA story supported by pictures. The stories will be consumed before the food and drink! (drink provided).

6 February : Minature Cameras by Bill Norman. It seems now that the digital camera has totally replaced the film camera and now the casual amateurs have the small ones and the professionals have the large reflex models. Bill will describe cameras from times when the opposite was true and film was the only system available.

5 March: Time Machine by Michael Lee. Michael has not only researched early time machines but has made some exquisite reproductions of some and will bring these with him. All have been made by him in his home workshop.

2 April: Annual General Meeting. This will follow the usual format with the business of the Society being reviewed and elections held for the committee. Please do consider volunteering for the committee. A film show is planned for afterwards and probably a local event to share with you.
