WINTER MEETINGS October 2009 –
April 2010
All meetings are held on Mondays at
the Salisbury Cycling and Social Club,
Salt Lane, Salisbury. The starting
time is 7.30pm and non-members are
welcome. Please note that the April
meeting is on the second Monday of the
month due to Easter.
5 October: Turnpike roads by Anne
Paterson. Anne researched this
subject for the Sarum U3A as part of a
project on “Communications and
Transport in and around Salisbury”. It
is nearly 30 years since the Society
published John Chandlers Monograph on
this subject and a fresh look at it is
long overdue –even more so as this
lecture was postponed last February
due to the weather then.
2 November: Member’s Evening,
the annual opportunity for you to tell
us about anything you have found in
the world of Industrial Archaeology.
We will have a slide projector,
overhead projector and episcope
available for your slides and prints.
Of course if you have something to say
but no pictures suitable for
projection we can always pass
documents around the audience. We are
already expecting some photos of
stationary engines.
7 December: The Great Salisbury
Train Disaster by George Flemming.
Joint author with Jeremy Moody of a
book with the same title, George will
guide us through the sequence of
events and offer his thoughts and
conclusions, together with those of
other researchers and writers.
2010
4 January: Members’ Social.
Please bring some items of food and an
IA story supported by pictures and
enjoy a seasonal session of IA
memories and discoveries. We will of
course concentrate on the stories
before the food and drink! The last
mentioned will be provided.
1 February: Another IA Session with
Don Cross. Don’s talks are always
welcome. It is 3 years since his last
book and we look forward to another
from our founder member which is bound
to include some noteworthy
observations.
1 March: Road Rollers by Doug
Roseaman. Doug is a trustee of the
Wiltshire Heritage Museum at Devizes.
He is a life-long model maker,
fairground and transport enthusiast
and a Chartered Mechanical Engineer.
Included in his transport interests
are road rollers – the subject of this
evening’s illustrated talk.
12 April: Annual General
Meeting. Note this is the second
Monday in April. The AGM will follow
its usual format with the business of
the Society being reviewed and
elections held for the Committee. A
film about iron ore extraction will be
shown which consists of archive
material from the period between 1935
and 1953.
